What are Probiotics?

The FDA and WHO have jointly defined probiotics as “live microorganisms that cause health benefits when administered adequately.” There has been growing attention to probiotics in recent years given their potential to modulate physiological functions like metabolism, nutrition, gut-brain axis, immunity, and pathological phenomena like cancer, infections, allergies, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular problems, oxidative stress, and psychiatric disorder that affect the quality of life and health.

Animals and Probiotics

The past twenty years have witnessed a growing use of probiotics for livestock, pets, poultry, and aquatic animals. Probiotics, fed as a part of the diet, affect the performance and welfare of animals via improving beneficial gut microbiota, which has a critical role in keeping the host healthy. The key usages of probiotics in animal health are digestive complications treatment, increasing feed conversion efficiency, reducing gut pathogens, improving fiber digestibility, improving animal performance, and stimulating the immune system.
